Cinema Lecture Series: The Seduction of Mimi, Lina Wertmüller (1972)

The Seduction of Mimi, Lina Wertmüller (1972).

In the context of the Cinema Lecture Series, we screen some of the most renowned movies of international cinema! The screenings are kicked off with a brief introduction by an expert from one of the RUG’s faculties and concluded with an open discussion about the movie in question.

This time we will watch The Seduction of Mimi (1972), Lina Wertmüller’s political satire of the troubled and exciting 1970s. Through Mimi’s (mis)adventures the film comments on the topics of political corruption, class struggle and the transformative dynamic of personal emotional attachments for political identifications. Mimi is constructed so as to reflect the qualities of a perfect average man of his times. His journey from political idealism to political disillusionment captures the zeitgeist of the 1970s. During this decade one might say that the seeds of ‘capitalist realism’, the seeds of a political consciousness that is characterised by the impossibility to envision an alternative to capitalism both as a system of production and as a principle of social, cultural and aesthetical organisation were planted. The Italian 1970s, the so-called years of lead, ended with the so-called ‘historical compromise’, the integration of the then powerful Italian Communist Party in official governmental institutions. This move marks the transition from a historical moment in which the struggle between capitalism and communism is not over to a historical moment in which political change becomes only piecewise and gradual - if at all possible. Mimi must be viewed as a figure living on a threshold, as a man caught in between two historical moments (an interregnum), as a subject in a liminal situation.
