Wonder about the artistic climate in Groningen one hundred years ago? Now you have a chance to explore the local artists’ association De Ploeg at the 100th anniversary of its foundation. Let’s see how did they try to push the boarder of exhibiting and developing art in this city of knowledge, and introduce the breakthrough of visual arts, architecture and literature to both artists and public.
The idea of modern art kept evolving. Maybe you know the colored architecture of Groninger Museum also follows a modern style. But how did this style arise and develop, and how do other designs following the same style look like? Get to know more about the Memphis group, an international group of young designers including Alessandro Mendini — the person who created the iconic Museum building in Groningen. Try to figure out the humor and irony behind the bright colours, playful shapes and combinations of cheap and expensive materials.
