This workshop will introduce you to the world of creative writing in relation to your research.
For two sessions in October we will try out different approaches to the art of writing, and how to create your own stories in relation to your research. Whether it is about finding new ways of telling family-members what exactly it is that you’re working on, or perhaps to express yourself in an opinion piece, or to finally start that long-awaited memoir, you have to begin your story somewhere.
This workshop will be an introduction to creative writing, so no worries if you have no experience on the matter! We will start from scratch and work our way up, which you can do in your own rhythm and time. And don’t forget, creative writing is as much about technique as it is about inspiration and enthusiasm.
For this workshop, we will be using a specific branch of creative writing called life writing, meaning you can draw inspiration from your own life, your fieldwork or anything else you are passionate about. This proves a great way of developing new ways to both look at, and write about, your own research for a larger or different audience.
We will cover a number of tips and tricks concerning creative writing, guidelines and do’s and don’ts, trying them out by using exercises each time.
The first session will primarily be an introduction, both to creative writing in general, and to your own in particular. We will discuss some examples and have a look at the many ways that can help you make your story your own, and getting it across the best you can. Keep people’s attention and interest piqued and turn that mundane morning into an exciting adventure in its own right.
The workshop will be lead by Pip Weytingh. A writer currently residing in Amsterdam, she has a degree in Creative Writing as well as literary studies, and is specialised in fiction and life writing.
