For two sessions in June we will try out different approaches to the art of writing, and how to create your own stories. This workshop will be an introduction to creative writing, so no worries if you have no experience on the matter! We will start from scratch and work our way up, which you can do in your own rhythm and time. And don’t forget, creative writing is as much about technique as it is about inspiration and enthusiasm.
Whether it is about finding new ways of telling family-members what exactly it is that you’re working on, or perhaps to express yourself in an opinion piece, or to finally start that long-awaited memoir, you have to begin your story somewhere. And you’d be surprised how many stories you may stumble upon once you start looking. Even the most mundane morning can hold a story waiting to be told. It may sound cliché… which is one of the things that we will cover in these sessions!
For this workshop, we will be focussing on a specific branch of creative writing called life writing, meaning you can draw inspiration from your own life, your research or anything else you are passionate about. Often, the struggle with writing lies in formulating what it is you want to say exactly; beginning that first sentence, or ending that last paragraph, and turning whatever you are thinking of into a coherent and engaging story. We will cover a number of tips and tricks concerning creative writing, guidelines and do’s and don’ts, trying them out by using exercises each time.
The first session takes place on June 16. Both sessions will take place online and are free of charge.
The second session we will continue with more practical approaches and exercises, perhaps even sharing some of our work amongst ourselves, but hopefully both sessions will prove largely interactive. And most importantly, we will definitely be doing some writing.
This workshop will be lead by Pip Weytingh. A writer currently residing in Amsterdam, which has a degree in Creative Writing as well as literary studies, and is specialised in fiction and life writing.
