As a PhD student you are diving deep into a field of research that you will study to extreme detail in the upcoming years, your own little research bubble. As GOPHER we want to connect more faculties and enable PhDs to have a refreshing excursion into another field in our “Outside the bubble” series. This month's lecture will be held by Prof. Dr. Marco Haan who is professor in Industrial Organization at the Faculty of Economics and Business.
He will give a short introduction into game theory and especially discuss its use in economics. Game theory is a branch of mathematics that studies the interaction between a number of rational agents. Therefore, it is an important tool for economists. In this lecture, Prof. Haan will give a short overview of the main developments in game theory, explain why no less than 15 game theorists won the economics Nobel Prize, and try to convince you that some basic knowledge of game theory is essential for almost any PhD-student. If there is enough time, he may also discuss some applications in his own field, Industrial Organization, which studies competition between different companies.
To get a flavor of Prof. Haan's work, you can watch his inaugural lecture in the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KErRR4WeAME
