As a PhD student you are diving deep into a field of research that you will study to extreme detail in the upcoming years, your own little research bubble. As GOPHER we want to connect more faculties and enable PhDs to have a refreshing excursion into another field in our “Outside the bubble” series. 

This month's lecture will be held by Dr. Michelle Bruijn who is assistant professor at the faculty of law. She will take you on an excursion through the Dutch law regarding the regulation of drugs. 

The Alternative War on Drugs

Several researchers confirm that the criminal justice system has failed to reduce drug use and drug-related crime. They argue that the war on drugs is waning, or sputtering to a close. However, Bruijn's research shows that the war on drugs is not ending, but changing. Countries have adapted to the constraints of the criminal justice system. Bruijn focuses on two of these adaptations: 1) the (re)regulation of cannabis in Canada and the Netherlands; and 2) drug-related evictions in the Netherlands and the United States.

To make this month’s lecture extra special, we will be hosting it in Cafe the Crown to create a more relaxed after work atmosphere in which you can listen to Dr. Bruijns lecture while enjoying a cold drink. Do not miss out because the first round is on us!
