This lecture begins by asking what feminist philosophy is and exploring an initial approach by looking at the so-called ‘waves’ of feminism. We argue that rather than distinguishing feminist philosophy and theory into discrete factions like this, it is more productive to take a problem centred approach, where we identify certain key themes and issues which have concerned feminists across all these different waves.
To illustrate this, we focus on the notion of ‘gendered complicity’: the question of why women often seem to perpetuate, reinforce or in some way uphold their own subordination, rather than resist it. This is a question addressed by feminist philosophers from Mary Wollstonecraft, through Simone de Beauvoir and up to the present day. We explore some of the different approaches to this issue and ask what we can say about the notion of gendered complicity by drawing together these multiple resources. Complicity is not simply an ‘arm chair concern’, but show how it is an issue that speaks directly to who we are and how we live. The speaker will present a view of gendered complicity as both a structural and a personal phenomenon and offer some reflections on feminist philosophy as ‘a way of life’.
