Il Conformista (1970), Bernardo Bertolucci
In the context of the Cinema Lecture Series, we screen some of the most renowned movies of international cinema! The screenings are kicked off with a brief introduction by an expert from one of the RUG’s faculties and concluded with an open discussion about the movie in question.
This time we will watch Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist (1970). The Conformist is an adaptation of the 1951 anti-fascist novel by Alberto Moravia. Like many of his contemporaries, Bertolucci tries to grasp through the cinematic medium the darkest moment of 20th century European history: fascism. Against the trend of portraying fascism and national socialism as pure and exceptional evils, Bertolucci reminds us through the banality of Marcello -the protagonist- that such a catastrophe could only happen because otherwise average people were willing to conform.
