Queer in Academia and Queering Academia

Dress code: we invite you to dress as “yourself”.  Dress in a way that feels comfortable and true to your whole identity (identities)!

What does queer mean?

For now, let’s just agree that we are using the word ‘queer’ as an umbrella term to talk about members of the LGBTQIA+ community, or individuals with minoritized identities of sexuality and gender. But we will talk more about that.

What are we going to talk about?

  • Subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which academia perpetuates exclusionary practices that hurt (among others) queer individuals.

  • How queer perspectives can challenge and disrupt existing power structures.

Is this a workshop? Do I have to talk?

We are going to have a discussion as a group and do some activities in smaller groups. You do not have to talk or interact with others if you do not feel like it.

Why is this relevant to me?

Traditional and current institutional or social practices of academia reinforce the exclusion of certain groups of people in our society, like women, people of colour, persons with disabilities, etc. Queer individuals are yet another group that faces discrimination and exclusion in academia but does not often receive a lot of attention.

Different systems of oppression work together to perpetuate inequality and injustice and promote an academic culture that only validates one way of knowing and one way of being. Having collective discussions about social justice, and bringing together different points of view will help us to a) better understand why/how some people are excluded, b) envision different academic spaces, and c) discuss actions towards collective liberation.

You can join this workshop as a person who experiences discrimination. You can share your lived experience and connect with others who have similar experiences. You can join as a person who wants to be a better ally for others and contribute to the discussion of possible ways to transform academia.

We expect your experience and ideas to complement our view on ‘queering academia’ and help us move the discussion forward!
