Outside the Bubble Lecture: From the ‘opium of the people’ to ‘Acid communism'

Philosophy has traditionally contradicted the state of intoxication with the critical attitude. We tend to associate intoxication with immersion and proximity, while critique is usually connected to the distance of an outsider-perspective. In the lecture we will analyse this tension, but also explore the possibilities, with Walter Benjamin and Mark Fisher as guides, of considering intoxication as a source and locus of (social and political) critique.

What would be the social, political and aesthetic implications for such a juxtaposition of intoxication and critique?
