We are very excited to organise together with Connect International a daily trip to Kamp Westerbork.
Deep in the quiet forests of Drenthe, only 40 km away from Groningen, lies a place formerly known as the ‘gateway to hell’. Kamp Westerbork symbolizes a dark part of Dutch history which should nevertheless be remembered in order to prevent it from happening again.
Built in 1939 as a refugee camp, the camp was soon used as a transit camp to Sobibor and Auschwitz. Approximately 100,000 jews and 250 Sinti and Roma from the Netherlands were sent from there to concentration camps in Germany, Poland and Czech Republic and never returned.
Join us for this for this one-day trip and learn more about the history of the country you live in! We start in Groningen and go to the memorial center in Hooghalen by bus. From there, we walk to the camp via the “milky way path”- a 45 minute walk during which you can learn something about our solar system and see the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. At the camp, a guide will tell us more about the history of Kamp Westerbork and how it was used after the Second World War. We will return to Groningen the same way as we came to the camp.
