Outside the bubble (series): Astrophysics (FULLY BOOKED)

As a PhD student you are diving deep into a field of research that you will study to extreme detail in the upcoming years, your own little research bubble. As GOPHER we want to connect more faculties and enable PhDs to have a refreshing excursion into another field in our “Outside the bubble” series.

On some rare nights in the Netherlands you can see a sky full of stars but have you ever stopped to wonder what is actually contained in the vast dark space above you? This month's lecture will be held by Prof. Dr. Pratika Dayal who is professor at the faculty of science and engineering. She will take you on a journey through the universe to discover what we know about dark matter.

“Shedding light on the dark side of the Universe”

The standard model of cosmology tells us that the Universe is mostly made up of ‘Dark Matter’, with normal matter contributing only about 15% of the total budget. However, direct detections have not yielded any results about the nature of this mysterious dark matter, leaving us with only indirect means of inferring its existence and distribution. She will try to answer tantalising questions including: What is the nature of this Dark Matter? Where is it? How did it shape the Universe that we see around us, and are there any possibilities that we will ever see it? She will also show how some of the earliest galaxies that formed in the Universe might be able to shed light on the nature of dark matter in the near future

In addition to the lecture, you will also get a chance to look through the telescope and have a closer look yourself at the stars above!

Location: Zernike, room 161 in the Kapteyn building (building 5419)
