Drawing workshop - "A Diverse World"

  • René Frank de Rooze 37 Pelsterstraat Groningen, GR, 9711 KH Netherlands (map)

Unleash your inner artist and join Gopher’s drawing workshop! In this workshop, we focus on Anthropocene postmodernism in the decade of the digital “truth;” diversity, pluriformity, or scattered disintegrated information chaos? We will explore how the digital information stream worldwide, happening 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, influences our capacity of ordering this information in a cerebral and visually workable matrix, under the supervision of René Frank de Rooze.

The topic of the workshop is “A Diverse World”, and is split into three different parts:

  1. Discovering the possibilities of drawing with the accent on expression and its black and white contrast (‘claire obscure’). Make several square forms on your sketch paper, of 7x10 cm. Ask yourself how to make these, by marking, pointillism, planes of black and white, curved and straight lines. Pitch a composition that expresses speed, loneliness, aggression, warmth, love, jealousy, happiness, etc.

  2. A diverse world. How to arrange the constant stream of influence that we are exposed to? For that, we need a visual matrix. We will start with some technical exercises, to benefit as much from the technique and visual possibilities of the material. Then we will start making some small sketches for a preliminary design. We will also explore the different types of grid or matrix that can hold together all visual information.

  3. In the last part, we will work out the most appealing idea.

For this workshop, you can use different types of materials: pencils, charcoal, graphite pencil, or ballpoint, although it would be best to use a (graphite) pencil; preferably HB and 2B as softness level. For paper, we will be working on white 120 grams, size 50x65, which will be cut in two.

Fee: €5

Please be noted that you can bring your own materials, or that you can buy materials on the spot (this will cost an additional €5). Additionally, there is only a limited number of spaces available.
