Acrylic painting workshop

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions? We have a good suggestion for you!

After the painting workshop “How to visualize your PhD”, the visual artist René Frank de Rooze is back with an acrylic painting workshop. In this 2 hour workshop, you will get an introduction into the acrylic painting and practice yourself while the artist will provide you with individual feedback on your work. The theme of the workshop is: The non-representational beauty of Insects. The artist, René Frank de Rooze, describes it as:

‘‘In general insects are considered at least a “pain in the ass”, but mostly as a hostile species, bringing disease and disaster…

But there is also another side to insects – and species biologically not considered insects but in size and appearance similar.-

The magical different forms and colours of them, compared to the “dull” appearances of mankind. Many artists, especially in animation and drawing, or S.F. Alike interested, used the form and appearances of insects as an inspiration form for their fantasies.

I am for example, always interested in the colours on a dung beetle. When in the right position to sunlight its shield transforms itself from an enigmatic deep black into a majestic colour field.

Or the abstract patterns on bees, simple yellow/ orange and black, but with such a powerful appearance it convinces “enemies” not to approach. Or the geometric structure of the eye of a fly when seen under a microscope. The world of insects is a beauty beyond, for the eye and phantasy of an artist.

Remember the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, with all those strange insect-like creatures? But one can also take abstract geometric art or pattern painting movements of the last century as an inspiration when imagining aspects of insects.

I would like to concentrate ourselves this time on the transformation of the idea and appearances of an insect into a piece of (abstract) art.

So no reproduction of reality, but an interpretation and inspiration of one's own relationship with insects and great new art coming out of it. The Beauty and the Beast are one…‘‘
