Are you interested in science communication but don’t know how to get started? Do you have an idea for popularising your research area for the general public?

The (newly founded!) MindMint SciComm Writing Club is building a community of young researchers that are interested in writing for a general audience. As a group, we will help each other develop ideas and accompany each other in the writing process. Whether you would like to write about life as a PhD student, about science communication in general, or about your research area, we will help you get your articles published!

In this first kick-off meeting, we will meet each other in a nice venue downtown (TBA), we will discuss whatever ideas you might already have, and once you are ready to start writing, we will match you with a buddy to help you stay on track and give you regular feedback.

Is communicating science your passion or do you want to learn how to communicate your work to a general audience?

MindMint; the platform for science communication, is recruiting writers. This is your chance to share your research with a broader audience and to develop your science communication skills.

You will become part of the SciComm Writing Club, a club for enthusiasts of science communication. Together, we will brainstorm about topics and you will write articles that will get published on the MindMint platform. You will also receive help from professional editors.

For two sessions in June we will try out different approaches to the art of writing, and how to create your own stories. This workshop will be an introduction to creative writing, so no worries if you have no experience on the matter! We will start from scratch and work our way up, which you can do in your own rhythm and time. And don’t forget, creative writing is as much about technique as it is about inspiration and enthusiasm.

The first session will primarily be an introduction, both to creative writing in general, and to your own in particular. We will discuss some examples and have a look at the many ways that can help you make your story your own, and getting it across the best you can. Keep people’s attention and interest piqued and turn that mundane morning into an exciting adventure in its own right.

The second session we will take place on June 23. Both sessions will take place online and are free of charge.

This workshop will be lead by Pip Weytingh. A writer currently residing in Amsterdam, which has a degree in Creative Writing as well as literary studies, and is specialised in fiction and life writing.

It will include a wide variety of activities, presentations & workshops related to careers both inside and outside academia. PhD candidates share their passion for research during a poetry slam. Paired up with a young poet they write a poem inspired by their research topic. A rhyming dialogue, a rap or a spoken word performance: anything goes. The audience decides who wins.

MindMint is the research communication platform for PhDs. At this relaunch event you will learn how you can contribute and how MindMint will help you create and share your content online. You will meet the members of the Editorial Committee and a very special guest, prof. dr. Casper Albers who will give a keynote lecture titled ‘Science Communication with Social Media’. After the presentation there will be time to talk to the Editorial Committee of MindMint.
