In the next workshop in the #GopherGoesCreative series, we will focus on drawing. The above painting (Falling Man, 1950) is made by German expressionist artist Max Beckmann and serves as the inspiration for this workshop. The instructor, René Frank de Rooze, shared the following description with us: “The idea of this hour is to make a landscape study, in which we try to express an upcoming tempest, a thunderstorm. But the point of it is that we don’t see the actual storm, and lightning, but by the arrangement of the landscape, its composition, the perspective, the contrast, the picture elements, and the lining; we immediately feel the danger and disaster heading towards us.“
The workshop schedule looks as follows:
Introduction and first two/three composition and idea sketches, followed by a short introduction to Beckmann’s painting (+/- 15 minutes).
Drawing of the selected sketch (+/- 40 minutes). René Frank will comment on the progress both individually and collectively.
Showing of work to each other and closing (+/- 5 minutes).
The materials necessary for this workshop are the following:
Paper: preferably 120 to 160/180 grams, with a not-so-smooth surface and, depending on the technique you will choose, sized from 20x30 centimetres (pen and ink) to 50x65 centimetres (charcoal).
Suggested drawing material: pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, black ink.
This event will take place virtually on Zoom, and is free of charge.
